Why learn to use a sword? There are as many reasons as there are practitioners. Some people are simply enthusiastic about learning to wield a katana, or "samurai sword". Others view the art as a nice physical exercise, a discipline for the body and mind, and a way to keep active. Still others see the sword as a way to round out their martial art skills or to improve their focus and body mechanics for other sports.
Training with the sword teaches distance, timing, efficiency, footwork and body movements at a level of efficiency and clarity that is invaluable. This has uses far beyond the martial arts. A golfer, for instance, can find that a winter of sword practice can sharpen ones concentration and understanding of precise body mechanics in preparation for springtime. The sword is sometimes symbolic of other things in your life. Sometimes it is a metaphor, other times it literally represents something other than a sword.
This is a fun, inexpensive and safe martial art to explore at any age. Sword techniques, by necessity, are straightforward and economical. There is no place for fancy or complicated movement. They are actually easy to learn and you will quickly fit into the class. The challenge, however, is in mastering the skills!
