Women have unique concerns when choosing a martial art school, and for good reason. Many schools are specialized in ways that are less than ideal for women- and the attitude of many schools can be intimidating and disrespectful.
While you may also attend our regular classes, we also offer a class that is "Ladies Only". This class is for yellow belts and higher which means that you may attend after a couple of months in our regular classes. Don't think this is a watered down class made easy for ladies- that is not the case! It is a physically challenging class with some very good martial artists. By limiting this class to girls and ladies we have an atmosphere where you can be comfortable and can work in a great environment.
Ideal for smaller people, our martial art does not rely upon upper body strength. We teach you to use softness and fluidity rather than strength and rigidity. In fact, using 'muscle power' makes techniques less effective!
We teach you to use fluid movement to escape or to counter an attack, and to use the enemies force against him. And our method of punching and kicking also does not rely upon muscle strength to deliver power. It is quite unique.
Classes begin with a short meditation followed by muscle relaxation exercise, stretching, and core body conditioning exercise. In addition, you will get a great cardio workout! By the time class ends you'll have shed your stress, burned a ton of calories, laughed a bit and sweat a lot. You will have fun and leave feeling good. Our practice combines elements similar to yoga, Tai Chi, aikido and other arts of graceful strength- it is perfect for those who understand that brute strength is of limited value.
Also Consider-
Swordwork and other weapons offer a fun physical and mental challenge with beautiful flowing movements that generate incredible power. Sword classes teach fluidity, poise and control (which means that the ladies are typically much better than the men!).
Our "ladies only "class will introduce you to traditional Okinawan dance- a historical component of this martial art. Dance has been a warrior tradition in virtually every culture ranging from the Massai in Kenya to native Americans. Dance preserves techniques, invigorates the spirit and engages the mind. The dances of our martial art are a graceful, slow meditation with martial arts techniques as the movements. These dances are rarely seen outside Japan.
Whether you seek fitness, self-defense, artistic expression or a practice for developing your mind, body and spirit, the Kodokai provides opportunities for you that you will not find elsewhere at any cost.
Our spacious school provides a clean, calm environment immensely different from the typical small, noisy neighborhood "karate" school or the macho MMA gym. The Kodokai is not simply "karate lessons". The Kodokai is a lifestyle.
