Weapons - Kobu-jutsu

If you were attacked by a dog would you drop whatever is in your hands or would you use whatever you could to protect yourself? What if you were attacked by a person?

It is far more effective to defend yourself with a weapon than without- if you know how to use it. While many martial arts include weapons the focus is invariably on "kata" (choreographed movements). Instead of self-protection, they are taught for entertainment or to improve coordination. Our method is different.

We were taught in Japan by people who haven't forgotten the old ways. We focus on practical application of weapon skills. We study how techniques work rather than how they look.

If you think that you can't carry weapons around with you, you are missing an important part of real weapons training. Weapons are everywhere. The weapons in the Dojo merely represent the things that surround you in life. On your desk, at work, in your car- everywhere there are things that can be used to strike, shield, trap or poke. Learning how to use the things that are part of your everyday life can make a big difference in how you feel if you ever have a flat on the side of the road on a dark night.

Weapons are also a great way for people to be involved in martial arts without being subjected to the rigorous contact of empty hand practice.

We can provide training in over twenty different weapons. The unique method of Motobu Udundi Kobu-jutsu includes weapons from Okinawa, the main islands of Japan and China. All were brought to Okinawa centuries ago.

Some people study weapons because they provide interesting physical activity, others study for their historical value, still others study to become well-rounded martial artists.

All of the weapon skills that you learn at Kodokai come directly from the source. We learned everything we know about weapons on the island of Okinawa.

You can learn weapons as a performing art anywhere, but if you want to learn how to use weapons, Kodokai is the place to be.
