We offer personalized training in a unique martial art seldom seen beyond the shores of Japan.
Differing in many ways from modern martial arts like karate, kenpo or taekwondo, this style offers well-rounded skills that all use the same principles.
Here are some highlights of what you may choose to study at the Kodokai Dojo.
Empty Hand Skills Our martial art specializes in quick powerful striking skills, but in a manner that is far more fluid and faster than what you have probably seen. But it is not solely a striking art. It also offers a full curriculum of throws and restraints that often remind viewers of aikido or ju-jitsu. The best of both worlds!
This is a great martial art for smaller people as it does not require superior upper-body strength. Of course, it works very well for big guys, too!
Emphasis is on "hands-on" practice rather than forms.
Sword People from all walks of life are finding the sword to be a great tool for battling weakness, a wandering mind or a widening waistline.
The sword will work your legs, arms, belly, back and shoulders. The sword represents anything you can hold in your hands; a stick, umbrella, cane, etc... A person skilled in our sword arts is a formidable adversary when wielding a stick.
And, it doesn't get more authentic than this- the only other places teaching this sword style are in Japan! Easy and fun to learn but challenging to master.
Other Weapons Weapons class offers skills using martial arts weapons as well as weapons of opportunity (purse, stick, broom, briefcase, pen).
In the event a warrior dropped or broke his sword in battle, he needed the ability to pick up any weapon and continue the fight. By applying unique principles, you too, can be ready to use anything that you can pick up as a weapon for self protection.
Our weapons practice differs from most schools in that our emphasis is not on "forms" but on functional application of skills.
