The martial art that we teach is called Motobu Udundi. We learned it in on the island of Okinawa, Japan where it was created over 450 years ago.
It is not a mainstream martial art and is seldom seen beyond the shores of Japan. It differs in many ways from arts like karate, kenpo or taekwondo.
Since few people in the west have seen this style, here are some highlights of what you may choose to study at the Kodokai Dojo.
Empty Hand Skills We teach the use of knees, elbows, kicks, punches and open hands providing a great cardio and strength workout as well as powerful skills. We also teach throws and restraints that often remind viewers of aikido or ju-jitsu.
This is a great martial art for smaller people as it does not require an aggressive attitude or superior upper-body strength. Of course, it works very well for big guys, too! The striking method is very quick, the soft skills use the enemies force against him- the more forceful the attack the more power in the techniques
Sword Sword classes are some of our most popular activities. People from all walks of life are finding the sword to be a great tool for battling weakness, a wandering mind or a widening waistline.
The sword is a way to get some moderate exercise and will work your legs, arms, belly, back and shoulders. The sword represents anything you can hold in your hands; a stick, umbrella, cane, etc... A person skilled in our sword arts is a formidable adversary when wielding a stick.
Our method is easy and fun to learn but challenging to master. You don't need any martial arts experience to jump in.
Other Weapons Weapons class offers skills using martial arts weapons as well as weapons of opportunity (purse, stick, broom, briefcase, pen).
In the event a warrior dropped or broke his sword in battle, he needed the ability to pick up any weapon and continue the fight. By applying our unique principles and tactics to any weapon, you too, can be ready to use anything that you can pick up as a weapon for self protection.
Our weapons practice differs from most schools. Our emphasis is not on "forms" but on function.
