Being physically active is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health.

Kodokai provides professional instruction in fitness activities that allow you to enjoy a more active lifestyle in a way that works for you. Some of our classes offer light exercise, others are intense- all are fun! Our classes are designed to help you meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans determined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Of course, our classes teach self-defense skills, but most people come to us for other benefits. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of many adverse health outcomes. Additional benefits can occur as the amount of physical activity increases. For adults, examples of these benefits include:

  • Lower risk of early death
  • Lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several associated risk factors
  • Weight loss and prevention of weight gain
  • Lower risk of certain cancers (including colon and breast cancer)
  • Improved bone health
  • Reduced depression
  • Improving personal appearance
  • Having fun and enjoying the outdoors
  • Serving as a good role model for children
  • Enjoying time with family and friends

How are you doing?

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, adults should do a minimum of 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week. A suggestion is three 50 minute periods of exercise each week (it's no accident that most of our classes are 50 minutes long).

At least two periods of strength building exercise each week are also recommended- our classes can also help you with this! Chance are, if you are like most people, you fall way short of these guidelines. But since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure doesn't it make sense to invest in your health and well-being?

Sports come and go with the seasons and machines can be plain old boring. Kodokai, however, offers you a structured year-round activity where you will enjoy a great support group in your fellow students, you will learn interesting and useful skills, improve core strength, gain flexibility, learn to meditate, and have lots of fun- a massive return on your investment!
