In this section of the Kodokai website I will share information that may enhance your experience at the Dojo. From time to time I will add things discussing concepts of the martial arts.

Please do not reproduce these pages as they are intended solely for active students.
They are a supplement to your training as a member of our dojo.

Here is a start to some of the terminology used in our school. While Japanese styles have a name and a way for doing everything, Motobu Udundi does not make great use of terminology and most of the stances and techniques that we use do don't have names. This is not a shortcoming but a reflection of the fluidity of the style. Names tend to define things and we do not want to do things based upon labels but rather do things in ways that work given changing circumstances.

Basic Terms

This document is already a classic. Appreciated by martial artists, military strategists and business people, it is a guide for dealing with conflict. I highly recommend that you read from it from time to time to shape your strategic thinking and martial arts development.

Here are a few thoughts on "ukemi". Ukemi is as much about ones character as it is about ones physical ability. Being a good uke requires humility, perception, sensitivity and a genuine ability to act in the best interest of both parties.

Ukemi is not just for martial arts. It is for any situation with changing circumstances. It is about not forcing your will on a lost cause. Instead, we must try to develop the perception, mental dexterity, and understanding of the laws of cause and effect to achieve our objectives in a different way.
