Rhode Island Kendo, Kendo in RI. Our sword methods come straight from Japan to Rhode Island. Authentic kenjutsu of Motobu Udundi.

Kenjutsu & Iaido

We teach a style called "Motobu Udundi Ken-jutsu", a diverse and well-rounded sword method encompassing battlefield techniques for multiple attackers as well as rapid drawing from the saya (sheath). It is very unique and differs in many ways from sword methods from the main islands of Japan. It is also the only surviving sword method from the island of Okinawa. This is a very rare martial art and is seldom seen beyond Japan. We are grateful for the generousity of our teachers Taira and Takamiyagi sensei's.

You don't need any martial arts experience and you are never too old to begin. You could be with us this week!

If you would like to learn sword skills you must choose your school carefully. While there are a few legitimate schools around, many offer completely fabricated sword methods. Why embarrass yourself learning silly poses borrowed from Hollywood when you could learn something with historical significance and practical value?
Looking for Kendo training in the Rhode Island area?
Our sword system did not come from the movies. We learned in Japan.

Motobu Udundi Kenjutsu is a functional martial art with techniques developed for effective self-defense. They are not for show nor are they restricted to the sword. The sword represents anything that you can use for self-protection; a stick, umbrella, cane, etc...  When you are skillful in our ken-jutsu, a simple stick can be a powerful weapon.

Kenjutsu is for defeating multiple enemies on the battlefield. Our method uses a natural upright stance that makes movements fluid and deceptive. We have no blocks or parries and no techniques for backing up. Instead, we attack the enemy and do not think about defending.
Iai-jutsu, or Iaido, is the practice of techniques beginning with the sword in the scabbard from either a sitting or standing position. Kenjutsu techniques begin with the sword already drawn and ready.

Our practice does not separate kenjutsu from Iai-jutsu. Along with techniques for disarming an opponent and skills using two swords, this makes a well-rounded sword system. In general, it is less ritualized and focuses more on application of techniques against a partner rather than solo practice when compared to other methods. The depth and diversity of this method makes a very dynamic and enjoyable practice that can provide a lifetime of challenges and friendships.
