Common Scheduling Questions
What's the deal with Okinawan Dance? The dances of Palace Hand contain the highest skills of our martial arts. In the old days they were performed only by men, as a tribute to foreign visitors to Shuri castle. It was an ingenious way of insuring that everyone in the room was a highly skilled martial artist ready to defend the royal family. Many cultures include dance as part of their warrior tradition; native Americans, Massai tribesman and soldiers of the Roman Empire all used dance to preserve skills.
What is a "Tuidi" class and why is permission required? Tuidi refers to throwing skills and joint locks. But that is only one half of tuidi. The other half is ukemi- receiving the techniques (being thrown). Students must have a level of ability that allows them to participate safely.
Okay, so how do I get into a tuidi class? You will be offered the opportunity when Sensei feels that the class would be good for you and that you would be good for the class. Specifically, you must show that you have the ability and interest in learning ukemi skills. Feel free to ask if you could attend the tuiti classes- sometimes we just don't know that you want to!
Why can't beginners join weapons class? Our weapons practice is different from what you will find in other schools. Rather than focusing on forms or choreographed patterns, we focus on applying skills against an opponent or multiple attackers. This type of practice requires some skill in order to reduce the risk of injury. But don't hesitate to let us know if you are interested so we can prepare you to join this class. It might not take long!
What if I only take the basic classes. Can I still advance? Yes, the basic classes cover a considerable range of skills- all that most people ever need!
What if my child is too big for the kids class? We are flexible and determine these things on an individual basis. Some kids stay in the youth classes beyond the age of 14, some kids move into the older group before they turn 13.
Do I have to attend every class? No, most people only attend two or three classes a week- some even less. Of course, the results that your realize will be in proportion to what your put into your training.
Do you use payment contracts? No. Contracts are a gimmick used by instructors who are not confident in the quality of their classes. They are fearful that students will leave if they do not find the instruction up to par unless they are locked into a payment plan. At Kodokai you pay one month at a time.
