At Kodokai you'll be practicing self-defense techniques 'hands-on' with training partners on your first day and every day.
 
We know how to ease beginners into practice, and, with over thirty years of experience, we have the depth to help those with prior training continue to grow and expand their abilities.

What is class like?
 
Meditation and Warmup - Each class begins with meditation followed by muscle loosening exercises to increase flexibility and provide a gentle warmup.
 
Toning and Strength Building - Our medicine ball workout will get your heart pumping while building core and upper-body strength. Balls vary in weight so you can work at a level that is right for you.
 
Striking Skills - You'll work on pads, heavy bags and with partners to develop powerful striking skills with the hands, elbows, feet and knees. You will also be burn tons of calories and get a great cardio workout!
 
Self-defense Applications - Working with training partners you will practice strikes, joint locks, submission restraints, throws and escapes. Weapon disarms, multiple attacker drills and a wide range of other topics are covered.
 
Cool Down - Classes end with a brief meditation.

I was introduced to Palace Hand in the home of 84 year old Master Toma when I was in Okinawa in 2002.
Eventually I was accepted as a student of Taira and Takamiyagi sensei's. 
 
We traveled to Okinawa to learn Palace Hand and brought our teachers to Rhode Island (Takamiyagi sensei has come three times, Taira sensei, once) to review our students and to insure that we are properly representing this unique martial art. 



← I took this photo of Master Toma the day he introduced me to Palace Hand. He has since passed away. His dojo sign, behind him, now hangs in our school.
